Schuberth Sun Visor – From an Idea to a Global Standard

For many years, Schuberth was a family-owned company. The CEO at the time commissioned Target Design to develop the design of almost every new motorcycle helmet. What he particularly valued was our ability to go beyond styling and create functional innovations that gave Schuberth a clear competitive advantage.

A particularly successful example was the Sun Concept.

The idea was simple but unconventional: why wear sunglasses when a sun visor could be integrated directly into the helmet?

Target Design developed a second, tinted visor that was fully integrated into the helmet shell. It could be pulled down when needed and retracted into the helmet with a simple movement.

The concept solved a very practical problem for motorcyclists. Low sun can be dazzling. Sunglasses provide a solution, but they become a problem when conditions suddenly change or the rider enters a tunnel. And while riding, taking sunglasses on and off is simply not an option.

The integrated sun visor, by contrast, is always there, instantly available and operated with a single movement.

When the concept was first presented, a specialist motorcycle magazine dismissed it as little more than a nice gimmick. The market proved otherwise. The Sun Concept became a major success for Schuberth.

Because the invention was not patented at the time, other manufacturers soon adopted the principle. What started as an innovative idea for a Schuberth helmet ultimately became a global standard in road motorcycle helmets.

For us, it is a perfect example of what industrial design can achieve:
Good design makes a product attractive. Good ideas make it better. Great ideas can redefine an entire product category.
