Salewa Ergotec
Salewa commissioned us to develop a new via ferrata carabiner. The goal was clear: create an ergonomically optimized product that would make operation easier while meeting the demanding requirements of alpine sports.
What emerged was far more than a design refinement—it was an entirely new operating concept.
The Ergotec carabiner works much like a pair of pliers, significantly reducing the hand force required to operate it. A specially developed geometry provides the locking mechanism and ensures secure handling. Testing showed a reduction in required hand force of around 30%.
At the same time, we created a modern, distinctive design that clearly sets the Ergotec apart from conventional carabiners.
The development process began with ideation and the visual exploration of initial concepts. After aligning the design direction with Salewa, we translated the concepts into precise 3D data. A first STL prototype made the functionality and ergonomics tangible immediately—a decisive moment that convinced both us and the client of the concept’s potential.
The design was then further refined and the first machined prototypes were produced.
The final production version is manufactured using high-quality forged aluminum components, combining innovative functionality with robust lightweight construction.
Unfortunately, the novel operating principle was not patented by the client. Today, similar mechanisms can be found across several manufacturers. We see that as a compliment: it confirms that the underlying idea was a genuine innovation in the field of via ferrata carabiners.
