A Luggage System That Became Part of the Porsche

As part of the Porsche Tequipment accessory programme, Porsche identified the need for an additional external luggage solution for the Boxster. At the time, the in-house design department was heavily committed, so the project was assigned to an external design partner.

Our competitor’s proposal featured a tubular system permanently bolted to the rear luggage compartment lid, designed to carry a conventional suitcase. However, the solution did not meet Porsche’s high design standards and failed to convince the team at Style Porsche.

This is where our work began. The goal was to create a solution that would not look like an accessory added as an afterthought, but would integrate seamlessly into the vehicle’s design language. We developed a completely new mounting system that, with the suitcase removed, appears as a distinctive design element in its own right. Elegant rails slide into the floor area of the luggage compartment to secure the system, while a crossbar accommodates the locking mechanism.

The suitcase itself was also designed specifically for the Boxster. Its shape follows the characteristic silhouette of the vehicle while making optimum use of the available space.

The design immediately won over Style Porsche. We were subsequently commissioned to handle the further development, engineering and implementation through to production readiness. Initial concerns about the system’s stability were fully resolved after it successfully passed crash testing.

An example of how consistent design can transform a functional accessory into an authentic part of the brand experience.
