Egli Motorcycles
From One to Six Cylinders
During the early years of our studio, the German importer of Egli motorcycles approached us with a clear objective: to make the motorcycles more distinctive and competitive against their strong Italian rivals.
One particular challenge was the Egli powered by the six-cylinder engine of the Honda CBX. Fitting six cylinders into the motorcycle was one thing – integrating the engine in a way that still made the bike look light and dynamic was another. We developed a consistently sporty design language to achieve this. The seat, made up of individual padded strips, further emphasised the bike’s purist character.
At the same time, we developed a sporty Egli powered by a Honda single-cylinder engine. There was nothing comparable on the market at the time. We therefore created a distinctive and timeless appearance that gave the brand’s sporting character a new interpretation.
Both projects were developed as 1:1 clay models and ultimately realised as fully rideable prototypes.
The response at the debut was remarkable: Honda immediately ordered one of the motorcycles for its museum in Japan – and Zündapp subsequently commissioned us with a major development project.
