An Idea That Became a Global Standard
BMW originally commissioned Target Design to develop a seal for the R100RT’s adjustable windshield. The seal was designed to function reliably in every possible position of the windshield. However, our analysis led to a fundamentally different conclusion: The solution was not a better seal—but rather a targeted airflow behind the windshield. To achieve this, we modified a test vehicle and conducted extensive road tests. The results were impressive across the board.

The Benefits of Rear Ventilation
Greater riding comfort
The negative pressure behind the fairing is reduced. Turbulence decreases, and the
rider experiences a noticeable reduction in stress.
Lower aerodynamic drag
The optimized airflow improves aerodynamics and reduces the
motorcycle’s overall drag.
No wear-prone seal
Rainwater is also channeled upward on the inside of the windshield and does not impair visibility.

A development with a lasting impact
The rear ventilation of the windshield was not patented at the time. Today, this airflow principle is state-of-the-art worldwide and can be found on nearly all touring motorcycles with fixed or adjustable windshields. TARGET doesn’t just develop solutions that improve existing concepts—we question the original approach and create better solutions.
