Casco SPEEDtime
Over many years, we have designed numerous helmet ranges for Casco, with several products setting new standards in helmet design. The SPEEDtime is an outstanding example.
Our development was based on extensive research conducted by the German Cycling Federation (BDR) in cooperation with the Institute for Research and Development of Sports Equipment (FES). The studies analysed and optimised athletes’ riding positions under real competition conditions.
Based on these findings, we developed the SPEEDtime systematically in the wind tunnel. The goal was a professional racing helmet that would not only perform aerodynamically in the optimum riding position, but also maintain its advantage when the athlete’s position deviates by up to 5°. Even with a deviation of just 1°, it outperforms conventional teardrop-shaped helmets that are highly optimised for a single position.
This consistent focus on the athlete’s real-world movement also defines the SPEEDtime’s distinctive appearance. Its form follows its aerodynamic function directly.
The results were an impressive validation of the concept: Using two of our prototypes, Miriam Welte and Kristina Vogel won Olympic gold in the team sprint at the 2012 London Olympics.
