Case Study: Casco – From Supplier to Premium Brand
How Bold Design, Technical Expertise and Elite Sport Can Build a Powerful Brand
Sometimes, a strong brand begins with a clear decision: to stop producing solely for others and build a brand of your own.
As a subcontractor with its own manufacturing facility in Tunisia, entrepreneur M. K. initially produced bicycle helmets for various brands. But his ambitions went further. He wanted to develop his own brand – independent, high-quality and clearly positioned in the premium segment.
That required more than a good product. It required a distinctive identity. And the courage to take new paths.
The Decisive Step: Design as a Strategic Partner
From the outset, M. K. understood that design would play a central role in the success of the new brand. He therefore wasn’t looking for just another service provider, but for a partner with experience, technical expertise and the ability to help develop the brand over the long term.
He found that partner in Target Design.
Target Design already had extensive expertise in developing sophisticated helmets – including projects for BMW and Schuberth in the motorcycle sector and Carrera in cycling. This knowledge formed the foundation for a shared vision: Casco should not simply manufacture helmets. Casco should become a distinctive brand in its own right.
New Directions for a New Brand
Together, we developed different strategic approaches and deliberately entered several market segments, with a particular focus on cycling, winter sports and equestrian sports.
We developed distinctive, sophisticated design lines that gave Casco a recognizable visual identity. At the same time, we created highly functional, aerodynamically optimized helmets for elite athletes.
For us, one thing was clear: premium quality emerges where design and technology become one.
Developing for Elite Sport
For the German Ski Association, we developed ski helmets in close collaboration with the athletes. Aerodynamic optimization was carried out, among other places, in the Audi wind tunnel.
Cycling also saw us break new ground. At the former East German wind tunnel in Klotzsche, we developed and optimized bicycle helmets for Olympic disciplines.
The results quickly became visible.
At the 2012 Olympic Games in London, Kristina Vogel and Miriam Welte won the women’s team sprint gold medal wearing our Speed Time prototypes.
The ski helmets also gained visibility in international elite sport, further strengthening Casco’s image as an innovative, performance-driven brand.
From Manufacturer to Premium Brand
Casco’s success story shows what can happen when entrepreneurial courage meets consistent design and technical expertise.
A manufacturer that initially produced helmets for other brands evolved into an independent brand with a clear identity and strong ambitions.
The combination of distinctive design, technical innovation and success in elite sport became a key driver of growth.
Casco evolved from a supplier into a premium brand – and into one of the leading names in the premium segment.
