Case Study: BMW Sport Cases
How Target Design Developed a Completely New Generation of Motorcycle Cases
BMW was looking for a completely new luggage system for what was then the fastest production BMW motorcycle, the BMW K 1200 S. The goal was a sport case whose storage space could be flexibly adapted to its contents—compact for everyday use and capable of significantly more volume when needed. However, initial internal development efforts failed to meet the high requirements. Consequently, Target Design was entrusted with the task of developing a completely new concept.
BMW was impressed by the very first designs. As the project progressed, the specifications were expanded: in addition to variable volume, theft protection and absolute waterproofing now had to be guaranteed. Target Design developed innovative technical solutions that met all requirements.
Based on the design data developed by Target Design, BMW implemented the system as a production product. Success was not long in coming: Due to high demand, the sport case was not only offered for the K 1200 S but was later expanded to include nearly the entire BMW Motorrad model range.
With a production run of more than ten years, the BMW sport case became one of the most successful accessory products in its class—and a prime example of how a challenging design and development task can lead to a sustainable mass-production solution.

– Integration of anti-theft protection and reliable waterproofing
– Handover of production-ready development data to BMW
– Used on nearly the entire BMW Motorrad model lineup
– Production run of over ten years
